Headaches
Do you or someone you know get migraines or headaches all the time? Most of the time, these folks have seen a lot of different doctors and gotten little or no help. They are being treated for their symptoms, yet the cause of the problem is still there. Have you ever considered about going to the dentist for a migraine? Neuromuscular dentistry is being used to treat that issue, among others. One of the latest technologies in dentistry today is neuromuscular dentistry. It is not like ordinary dentistry since it looks at the muscles in the neck and jaw and how they affect the teeth.
Neuromuscular dentistry understands that the muscles that move the jaw need to be relaxed and comfortable so that they don't get in the way of the teeth and jaw joint. In other words, we need "happy muscles." When we don't have these "happy muscles," we may get headaches, loose teeth, clenching or grinding, and root abfractions. Pain or clicking and popping in the jaw joints, Pain in the neck, shoulders, and back, Numbness in the arms and fingers, facial pain that isn't particular, trouble swallowing, teeth that are sensitive to hot or cold, Teeth that are too close together, gums that are going back, Ringing or stuffiness in the ears. For instance, someone can have migraine headaches and no other symptoms, yet they could still have a neuromuscular dental issue.
Neuromuscular dentistry uses a variety of tools to assist people reach a state of "Happy Muscles." First, we need to locate the most comfortable resting posture for the patient. This is the position where the muscles are relaxed, no matter where the teeth are. The Myo-monitor is a tool that helps the patient relax their muscles. It is a T.E.N.S. (Transcutaneous Electrical Neural Stimulation) unit that works at low frequencies. The Myo-monitor sends a very weak electrical impulse to the Trigeminal Nerve and the Facial Nerve.
This TENSing does three things. To start, it moves waste metabolites and lactic acid away from the muscles that are under stress. Second, it makes the blood flow to the muscle better, which gives the muscle more oxygen, glucose, and energy. Finally, it lets the jaw relax into the best posture for it. Tensing normally takes 45 to 60 minutes, although it can take longer if the patient's symptoms are really bad or their muscles are really tense. We may use an EMG machine to check how tight the muscles are at times. The EMG shows how hyperactive the muscles are before they tense up. After TENSing, the muscles are significantly "happier" and there is substantially less activity.
After TENSing and identifying the best position for the jaw where the muscles are pleased, we construct an orthotic to retain the muscles in that position. It is very crucial to keep the muscles in this posture because it keeps them at their proper length, which stops them from going into spasm. We want to get back to "Happy Muscles" again.
The muscles can repair, the pain can go away or go away completely, and the jaw joint can mend when you use the orthotic. To make sure the bite is right and the problems go away, the orthotic is normally worn for 1 to 3 months. We decide on Phase 2 of treatment after the patient has no more symptoms. The patient may choose to wear the orthotic permanently, undergo orthodontic treatment to reposition the teeth, restore the teeth, or modify the teeth to get the optimal bite.
I recently saw three patients who needed help with their migraines.
Alan is a 68-year-old man who has had migraines 6 to 10 times a month for the last 25 years. "I had seen every kind of doctor in the country, even the Mayo Clinic." There was no way to halt the headaches; the only thing that worked was taking pills to lessen the discomfort. I had to bring drugs with me everywhere I went. Alan had neuromuscular dentistry done on him, and now he seldom ever has headaches. "I'm really thrilled with how my treatment turned out. I seldom ever get headaches anymore, therefore I don't need to take any headache medicine. After all these years, what a relief.
Barbara is 43 years old and has three kids. She has had headaches and a stiff neck for the past seven years. She has seen many doctors, specialists, chiropractors, and acupuncturists throughout the years. "Nobody could make the headaches go away, and I haven't been able to move my neck all the way for a year and a half." Because of a migraine, I couldn't go to my 10-year-old's birthday celebration. Barbara came to our clinic with a terrible headache and a knot in her neck muscles that was the size of a golf ball. We used the TENS device on her for 60 minutes. "I couldn't believe it." For the first time in a year and a half, I could move my neck from side to side and my headache was gone. Barbara hasn't had any pain in the last three months, and she is quite delighted with how her orthotics have worked. "I can't wait to get my mouth fixed."
Deaun used to get migraines from time to time, but not anymore. "I was with my spouse at a comedy club when I started to feel a migraine coming on. We left the club, went home, and I went to sleep. The migraines have been pretty much all the time for the previous two years since then. Deaun had seen a lot of doctors, but none of them had helped. "They kept saying that all they could do was give me pain medicine." Then I learnt about Dr. Cohen. My spouse didn't think anything would work, but I truly wanted to give neuromuscular dentistry a shot. I'm so happy I did. My headaches have gone down to roughly one per six weeks, and even my husband, who is a sceptic, is impressed with how much better they are. I wear my orthotic all the time and feel terrific.
